Our goal...

Coffee and Clay is a family run business owned together by Glenys and her husband Nils. Our goal is to offer each guest a fun and relaxing environment, where you can create memories that last a lifetime. Our company’s mission is to make sure that your experience at our studio is as much about the quality time you spend with family and friends as it is the piece you create.

1. - How does it all work?

If you’re not familiar with how the Coffee and Clay works, it’s easy, honest:

(1). Choose an idea and a piece of pottery from our range of beautiful handmade pieces - start thinking now about your design!

(2). We’ll get you started - everything from how to use the paints to how to get the best results.

(3). Leave it with us - pick up your items, glazed and fired around a week later.

2. - Do I need to book?

No you do not need to book just drop in and paint. During busy holiday periods it would be advisable to ring us if you are a group of more than 3 people.

3. - Do you charge a studio fee?

No we don't charge a studio fee, you simply pay for what you pain

4. - Do you have refreshments?

Yes, we pride ourselves on also having a relaxing downstairs café with great homemade food. We serve fairtrade tea and coffee and have a special children's menu. We have vegetarian options, breakfasts, sandwiches, panini's, jacket potatoes, homemade soup, and home made daily specials. 5. - Can I have my pottery back any quicker?

We will do our best, it really does depend how much pottery there is going through the kilns and what time of the year it is! We do offer an express service for £5, pottery takes 4 working days.

6. - At what age can I get a good hand print?

We recommend footprints up to one year, and handprints from one year onwards. Getting a baby’s handprint is extremely difficult, they scrunch their little fists up.

7. - Can I leave my children with you?

Unfortunately not, although we love working with children and helping them do their best effort on their pottery, we aren’t qualified child minders.

8. - Can I mix the paints?

Yes you can although we don’t recommend it, because you then can’t guarantee how the colours will come out.

9. - What happens if it goes wrong in the kiln?

Usually we will of course issue you with a voucher to the full value so you can come and have a go at decorating a replacement item.

11. - If I can't paint will you paint it for me?

Yes, you can commission us to paint a piece especially for you. An experienced member of staff will talk through ideas and create your bespoke piece. We charge for the piece that you choose and then a £5 min charge for the artists work.

10. - Do I need to be artistic?

No definitely not. We have a large selection of stamps, sponges, stencils, examples and ideas books. Also all of our experienced staff are on hand to help with ideas, techniques and drawings.

12. - How much does it cost?

Our cheapest piece of pottery is £6 and the most expensive piece is £50. There is a piece of pottery to suit every budget on average between £8 and £15. There is no studio fee or hidden extras for firing and wrapping.

13. - How long will it take to fire the item?

Your pottery has to be hand dipped, foot wiped and loaded into the kiln. The firing itself takes a good couple of days, normally it is around a week later.

14. - Is there anywhere to park close by?

Yes, Skipton has lots of car parks available, and there are also the cobbled spaces on the High Street available on days when the "Towns Market" is not on. For direction then click here.

15. - Are the paints safe for children and babies?

All are paints are child safe, water based, non toxic under glazes. They wash out from clothes which is the good news!

16. - Can I pay by card?

Yes, we accept all cards and cheques over £10

17. - Do you have baby changing facilities?

Yes, we do.

18. - Can I breast feed my baby in the shop?

Yes, we have comfortable chairs and a relaxed atmosphere.

22. - Will you help me with my baby prints?

We have many years of experience printing babies feet and hands so we are more than happy to help at no extra charge.

21. - Can I bring my own food if I have a food allergy?

We have an established cafe so we should be able to cater for all your needs and requests.

20. - Can I put my piece in the dishwasher/microwave?

Your pottery is not advised for the microwave but will be safe for occasional dishwasher use.

Yes and the paint will also come out of your clothes as they are water based and non-toxic.
